If your child suffers a severe toothache, knocks out a tooth, or experiences any other dental emergency that can’t wait, call our office immediately. The sooner you seek urgent dental care, the better the outcomes.
Is It a Dental Emergency?
In general, a dental emergency is a situation requiring immediate attention to address severe tooth pain, save a damaged or knocked out tooth, manage dental trauma, treat an infection, or stop bleeding. If you’re not sure if your child is experiencing a dental emergency, contact our office. We’ll evaluate the situation and determine the best course of action.
At North Phoenix Pediatric Dentistry, we are happy to offer same-day appointments to care for your child’s needs. If a dental emergency occurs outside of our office hours, call our emergency number for guidance.
If your child sustains a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.
Common Dental Emergencies
The following are common dental emergencies and things you can do to help:
A Severe Toothache: Have your child rinse with warm water and use dental floss to dislodge any food particles that may be stuck. If the pain persists or there’s swelling of the face, cold compresses may help. Contact our office for an emergency appointment.
Bleeding from the Mouth: If there’s bleeding from your child’s tongue, lips or cheek, apply gentle but firm pressure with a gauze or cloth. If you can’t control the bleeding, visit your nearest hospital emergency room.
Knocked-Out Tooth: We do not recommend replanting a knocked-out baby tooth to prevent damage to its permanent replacement. If, however, the knocked-out tooth is a permanent one, pick it up by the crown, rinse it with water, and try to return it to its socket. If that’s not possible, carry it in a cup containing some milk. The sooner you seek emergency care, the better the chances of saving the affected tooth.
A Permanent Chipped or Broken Tooth: After contacting our office, use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If there are broken pieces of the tooth, collect them and bring them to your emergency appointment.
How Can You Lower the Risk of Dental Emergencies?
Encourage daily brushing and flossing to reduce the chances of tooth decay which, if not treated, can progress and lead to a dental emergency. Make sure your child consumes a healthy, balanced diet to provide the nutrients needed to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
If your child plays contact sports, wearing a custom mouthguard can help prevent damage to the teeth and soft tissues by absorbing heavy blows to the mouth. Regular dental exams and professional cleanings also play a key role in promoting your child’s oral health and lowering the risk of dental emergencies resulting from untreated infections or advanced decay.
North Phoenix Pediatric Dentistry is fully equipped and prepared to offer urgent care for dental emergencies. Our gentle approach and sedation dentistry options will ensure your child is as comfortable as possible while receiving the highest level of care.
