Pediatric Dental Exams and Cleanings

At North Phoenix Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that preventing dental problems from developing or progressing is the best way to maintain healthy smiles for life. We’re pleased to offer comprehensive dental exams and professional cleanings to lower your child’s risk of developing tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, and a host of dental problems. Our kid-friendly team is committed to providing outstanding, gentle care.

How Often Should You Schedule Your Child’s Dental Visits?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), your little one’s first dental visit should occur within six months of the first baby tooth erupting and no later than the first birthday. From that point, visiting the dentist for regular exams and cleanings typically occurs twice a year. However, children prone to dental problems may require more frequent visits.

If your child develops tooth pain, swelling, tooth discoloration, or if you have any other concerns between routine dental visits, make sure to contact us for an appointment. The sooner we address any dental problem, the lower the chances of complications down the road.

What Are the Benefits of Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings?

Routine dental exams allow us to identify and treat dental problems in their earliest stages. That helps prevent them from progressing and leading to dental emergencies or requiring extensive dental procedures down the road. Dental cleanings are also essential because they allow us to remove plaque and tartar buildup, reducing the risk of tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease, and bad breath. Keeping up with periodic dental visits is one of the best ways to ensure your child enjoys healthy smiles for life.

What Happens During Your Child’s Dental Exam?

After greeting you and your child, we will ask you about your child’s medical and dental history and if you have any concerns. Our pediatric dentist will conduct a thorough dental exam to evaluate your child’s teeth, gums, bite, and overall development. We’ll make sure your child feels comfortable and at ease throughout the visit.

Around age four, we may recommend digital x-rays to uncover potential problems we can’t see during a physical examination. We utilize modern x-ray equipment with 80 to 90 percent less radiation exposure than traditional x-ray equipment.

After your child’s exam, we will discuss our findings with you. We may recommend preventive or restorative treatments, if needed, to keep your child’s smile healthy and bright.

What Happens During Your Child’s Dental Cleaning?

Our dental hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar deposits from your child’s teeth and gum line to lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We may also recommend a fluoride treatment, if needed, to strengthen your little one’s tooth enamel and lower the risk of cavities. After cleaning your child’s teeth, we may demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure your child’s smile stays healthy between cleanings.

At North Phoenix Pediatric Dentistry, we believe the best way to keep your child’s smile healthy is to prevent dental problems from developing. We encourage you to keep up with your child’s routine dental exams and cleanings to keep dental problems at bay. Together, we can help your child develop excellent oral health habits for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
